My urban public elementary is in a low-income/high poverty school district. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom, but that will not stop me from having high expectations for them!
My students are highly creative and enthusiastic about learning.
They love art, they love to read and write stories, and they love lots of positive feedback. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may hinder them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "normal."
While students are with me, I constantly look for the positive. I do everything I can to give them a feeling of success. Just ONE success causes them to want more, and they come to realize that THEY are in charge of their successes. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience at school. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I hope to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic and artistic excellence!
My Project
My kindergarten through fifth grade artists need an ipod and speakers so that I can collaborate with the music teacher to make connections between art and music. With the ipod I will be able to select classical, jazz, blues, and other genres that correlates to art of a particular time period or of a particular artist style. Music and art go together like peanut butter goes with jelly. By bringing music into the art studio my artists will flourish!
My students need the power of music to help the art studio come to life.
Imagine an animated cartoon without the classical symphonic piece that accompanies it! This is what I want to bring to students, to show them how music influences art and art influences music!
