Being that we team-teach at our school site in the upper grades, I encounter a wide variety of readers on a daily basis. I work with EL Learners, special education students, students who are at grade level, as well as students who are advanced. I continually strive to find diverse ways to meet the needs of all 120 of my students. They are energetic and eager learners who come to school each day with a smile on their faces.
As a teacher, I want to provide my students with all the tools possible that will allow them to grow academically.
Hopefully, by doing this project, I can meet the needs of my diverse learners, help my students grow academically, and continue having them come to school with a positive attitude and a strong desire to learn.
My Project
We all know that it is imperative to read to our children when they are young, but why shouldn't we read to older children as well? Reading aloud, or listening to someone read, provides an excellent model of reading which promotes literacy and language development and helps to foster a lifelong love of books and reading.
Research shows that all students, especially those with learning difficulties, become better readers and writers when given the opportunity to use both their eyes and their ears to read a book.
Having this project funded would allow me to set up and maintain a Listen to Reading center in my classroom. This center will allow the students to use the audiobooks (books on CD) and listen to many memorable and inspirational stories such as Esperanza Rising, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, Bud, Not Buddy, The One and Only Ivan, James and the Giant Peach, and many more. These are quality pieces of literature that students would not have access to without this opportunity.
