We spend 120 minutes a day on reading. Seventy-five of those minutes are spent in small group lessons with me. While I am working with small groups, other students are selecting work-stations. This is independent work that is based the skills that are being taught or that need to be reviewed.
My students are amazing.
They are little busy bodies. They love reading. One of the workstations that the kids love to go to is the listening station. However, our school is impacted on limited funds for materials that our students need to help them be successful.
My Project
My students LOVE the listen to reading station. However, I have had to close the station recently due to the fact that the CD players are not working correctly. I currently only have 1 player that is working and that is not 100% of the time. With working CD players, the students will be able to grab a over-sized pillow, put on the ear phones, open the book and sit back and relax while a story is being read to them. Fluency is a key component to reading. Students are not only listening to a story they enjoy but are listening to it being read fluently. With new kid friendly CD players in the room my students will be able to continue to enjoy the listen to reading station.
Listening to fluent reading will help them understand what it sounds like when we read.
They also follow along with the book and this helps them with word recognition. My students will be overjoyed with new CD players so they can go back to selecting listen to reading as part of their daily work station routine.
