Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Every child has a different learning style and pace. Each child is unique, not only capable of learning but also capable of succeeding."- Robert John Meehan. My classroom is full of unique students who each have a different style of learning. Their love for reading is contagious!
The school I teach in is Title 1 and unfortunately has a lack of technology.
My classroom is very diverse and filled with students from different cultural backgrounds. Most students come from low income homes and have a lack of resources to supplement their passion for literacy. Due to these factors, 90% of my class is reading below grade level and 10% are English Language Learners. However, every day their love for reading continues to blossom! They are interested in reading a variety of genres by different authors and they especially love to listen to mentor texts being read out loud or on tape.
My Project
Our 90 minute reading block is one of our favorite times of the day! In our classroom, our reading program is supplemented by a program called The Daily Five. The Daily Five consists of reading to self, reading to someone, word work, work on writing, and listen to reading. As much as my students enjoy this time of the day, it has been difficult successfully implementing the Listen to Reading component due to the lack of a Listening Center. Through listening to books on tape, my students will continue to be exposed to what fluent, expressive reading sounds like as the words come alive right before them!
This generous donation will continue to blossom my students love for literacy!
As they are exposed to fluent reading on a daily basis, they will start to apply it to their own reading which will help them achieve reading success. Listening to reading on a daily basis will guide them through stories while challenging them to use critical thinking at a higher level. In addition, listening to a variety of stories will inspire them as writers, too!
