My fourth grade class is meeting and talking about the books that they are reading. They are questioning each other, building ideas and their love for reading. These lively conversations go on each day at our public school in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. We'd like to tape record our conversations so that we can listen to our conversations and make them even better. To do this we need one tape recorder for each of our 10 book clubs and blank tapes for each recorder. When book clubs are not in session, struggling readers can record their out-loud reading and work on improving their fluency. Busy parents can still volunteer by reading classroom books on tape for the many fourth graders that are just learning to read, but do not want to read the same old books they saw in their younger classes. There are so many ways tape recorders and blank cassette tapes can bring our classroom community together. It's true that kids learn from each other when they have a chance to talk to each other about the books they love. Their reading comprehension and their critical thinking improves. Help keep the conversations going!
