Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a 3rd grade teacher in East Flatbush, Brooklyn and I have a class of 25 children (ages 8-10) of VERY diverse abilities. Some of my students are functioning well on a 3rd grade or early 4th grade level, while others are barely reading at a late 1st grade level. When we are doing reading activities, the students who lag behind are often frustrated and act out behaviorally because they cannot keep up with the rest of the class. I found a solution halfway through the year that brought about GREAT results-- the listening center! My lower performing students LOVE to go to the listening center and read-along with a story. They can then participate in the literacy activities because they don't have to focus all of their energies on decoding the individual words. The problem is that my books-on-tape selection is quite poor. I have a few book-and-tape sets, but there is only one book per cassette tape. I really need some listening center books where there are 3-4 books per cassette, so several students can join in the listening. Please help my lower performing students to be able to participate in the classroom activities by donating towards the purchase of BOOKS ON TAPE for our classroom listening center. My students and I thank you!!
