Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you had to learn something that seemed incredibly difficult or impossible to achieve? Then you understand what a difference having something enjoyable to learn with can make.
I teach 5th grade Bilingual, so everyone in my class has Spanish as their first language.
This is the last year to have any Spanish support before going into middle school, so I try to build up their English foundation as much as possible.
The school is low income, and my students don't have a lot of learning opportunities outside the classroom. Because of this, I try to give them every possible memorable opportunity. Mp3 players are familiar and exciting to be able to use in the classroom, making the learning experience "stick" that much longer.
My Project
I'm requesting a set of five mp3 players for our reading and listening area. These will allow me to download electronic books for the students to listen and follow along. By listening to literature and seeing it in print, they are growing their English vocabulary. They are also hearing how the language flows and learning popular expressions so they become able to communicate more like their native English speaking peers without being embarrassed to use the English.
I am also requesting a digital voice recorder to be able to record books we already have and put them on the mp3 players. The voice recorder will also enable us to enhance other projects we do with technology. For example, when we create PowerPoints or other presentations, the students can record themselves narrating the slide show and put the recording in as part of the slides. They can also record themselves reading/speaking in English, then listen to the recording to know how to correct pronunciations or sentence structure.
