My students love learning! This kindergarten class is in an urban Ohio school district and they are always asking questions and eager to discover the answers. They love hands-on learning and engaging projects. They also enjoy literature and listening to read-alouds.
Kindergarten should be a year of learning through play, engaging in projects that reflect their interests, developing social skills to work with others, and learning to love reading!
My goal is to foster and facilitate their learning, reading, and discovering. This is a diverse group of students, and there are a variety of needs and learning styles in the classroom. I want this incredible group of kids to have all the opportunities they can to have a great first year of school.
My Project
In kindergarten, students begin to learn to read by listening, looking at the pictures, and demonstrating reading behaviors such as turning the pages. A great way for the students to practice reading is with a listening station during their literacy centers.
At this center, students can independently "read" by listening to a story that is being read to them on a cd player.
They look at the pictures, turn the pages to follow the story, and they are exposed to complex and interesting stories. Sometimes they may be able to read along with the book, but if not, they are still hearing the story and practicing important comprehension strategies. This allows them to be exposed to high quality, interesting literature; which may be beyond their independent reading level.
The listening station will be used during literacy centers, and several students will participate at a time. This station will be used daily with my students. It will help to increase their vocabulary, comprehension, and love of books. The listening center will help enrich their experiences with literature!
