I teach 21 second-grade students at Woodlake Elementary School in Mandeville, Louisiana. Many of my students were affected by Hurricane Katrina, whether in loss of power or loss/damage to their homes. We were out of school for 5 weeks and have been playing catch-up ever since! In collaborating with other teachers we've come to the conclusion that listening skills are a major area of weakness for our students...enter the "Listen to Learn" program. Going a step beyond the traditional cassette listening libraries, the "Listen to Learn" program consists of digital audio files that will be accessed via classroom computers and portable MP3 players. The use of digital audio recorders will allow myself, my students, and their families, in addition to special guest readers, to record a variety of books from our classroom and school library. These digital audio files will then be uploaded to the MP3 players for use by all my students. In addition, the files will be uploaded to our class website, which will make them accessible to other students at our school. This adds the potential to affect over 700 students! The funds will be used to purchase 2 digital audio recorders (that are compatible with our school computers) and 4 portable MP3 players (including headphones). The "Listen to Learn" program will help my students to exercise their listening skills and will also aid in reading comprehension. It also has the potential to affect the entire student body of our school--over 700 students!
