Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My evolving school library serves an eager to learn and inquisitive student population of almost 700 amazing students from PreK- 5th. We are a Title I school with a 100% free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch population. Our transiency rate is roughly 39.1% which is significantly higher than the district average. Our ELL population is almost 50%. We have primary and intermediate resource classes, and three self-contained special education programs-primary autism class, intermediate LIF, & intermediate STAR (Severe Emotional Challenges) classes. Embedded in all learning for our readers is that, above all else, our differences and diversity, who we are and how we learn, are to be celebrated and shared. Students are encouraged to follow their passions, to believe in themselves, to use their strengths, and to look out for each other.
Our library not only emphasizes print and digital skills, but also the 3 Cs of Library - Community, Collaboration, and Critical Thinking skills, which are needed for students to be successful wherever life takes them.
WISER is the guiding acronym in our library instruction. It stands for wonder, investigate, synthesize, express, and reevaluate. This acronym guides all our work as these are skills needed to be lifelong
My Project
Our school library classroom is blessed to welcome and teach every student in the building. However, we have a transiency rate that is one of the highest in the district. This means we have to print a higher than normal amount of materials. much with with identifying information, to run and maintain our library, including a high number of library cards for students to use. Additionally, we also print out labels with bar codes for books and other items for check out, as well as labels for notes going home.
With this duo label printer, there are also several literacy activities I saw utilizing them that will be engaging for my learners, and the headsets will mean that multiple students do not have to share the several sets we have which will help maintain focus.
Between rosters, late materials reports, health notices, copies of IEPs, and the list goes on and on, papers that have identifying information that need to be destroyed daily in the library to help maintain our students' privacy. Having a shredder in the library for daily use will cut down on piles of papers that need to be sent off to the shredder, which also helps keep our library clean and organized.
