I am a media specialist in a small elementary media center. Our students come from a rural, low income area. I am excited about the following project and impact it will have on my 150 third through fifth grade students.
These students will develop a love of reading during this lively exploration of quality literature. The N.C.School Library and Media Association (NCSLMA) coordinates a state-wide activity in which children vote for their favorite picture books and chapter books from a pre-selected list. The votes are used to determine awards that are bestowed. This is a "Big Deal" to the authors because the awards are determined by the very audience for which they are writing...the children! This a "Big Deal" for the students because they take their voting responsibility very seriously. And this is a "Big Deal" to educators because this helps foster the love of books and reading, showcases quality literature and helps our students become discriminating readers, and helps our students learn the importance of listening and voting wisely (a concept we need to stress even with our smallest citizens).
In order for our school to participate, we need at least one set of picture books (18 titles) and one set of chapter/junior books(15 titles). We also need the accompanying Accelerated Reader quizzes. These quizzes measure the reading comprehension of students. This component allows teachers to closely monitor student progress as part of this fun and motivational project.
Before hearing these titles, each grade, K - 4, will discuss qualities of good literature and the qualities students look for in a good book. They will also learn about the two most prestigious children's book awards, the Caldecott and Newbery. Students will then hear each title over a period of 4 - 6 weeks. A special voting day will be scheduled; each child will vote; votes will be tallied and graphed and announced over the intercom.
Our votes will be sent to NCSLMA and by the end of the school year, the state-wide winner will be announced.
This project will be divided into two parts. Part one will fund the Picture Books and the voting by primary students. Part two will fund the chapter books and the junior voting.
I have witnessed even reluctant readers become excited and enthusiastic during the voting process. I would love to witness that again this year!
