“The limits of my language are the limits of my world.” ‒Ludwig Wittgenstein My students are English Language Learners in Kindergarten through 5th grade. They are all at different stages in the language acquisition process, and work hard at improving their language skill every day.
I love each and every one of my “linguists!" They are funny, hardworking, honest, engaging and inspiring people who have descended on our Title 1 school from each continent and all corners of the world.
We are proud of our heritage and our native languages while working hard every day to acquire those necessary English skills. My students love technology, and I try to use any mode of learning or use of technology available to make learning fun and interesting.
This is only the second year that the ESL program has been offered at our school. As parents are learning that ESL services are available on our campus, our number of English Language Learners have increased dramatically.
As an ELL myself, I am proud and honored to be able to serve in this role. I can truly relate to the impact that a good English education can make in the life of a non-native speaker.
My Project
My students need to work on their listening skills. I’d like to combine this with a love for literature by allowing my students to choose a book from my extensive ‘books on CD’ library without being limited by their developing reading skills. By adding a splitter, a pair of students will be able to choose a book and reading nook to enjoy listening to someone else read to them while following along in the text. They will then be able to share what they just heard/read. This will allow students to practice all four language acquisition domains; listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Another bonus will be the portability of the iPod. I will be able to bring good quality literature to my students in my “portable office”, regardless of their location in the school. They will not be limited by electrical outlets and I will not have to guard my CD's from scratching. The power of selection and ownership of their learning will be with the students themselves.
My goal is to provide my students with the best education possible every single day.
This project would bring a much needed opportunity to just listen and enjoy for my hardworking students while providing them with the differentiated opportunities that are necessary for their success in their new country.
