"I can't concentrate!" This is something a student should NOT have to say in a classroom. Recently, we received mini-laptops through a grant to build a mobile computer lab for our school. The students love them, but they need ear phones when using the laptops.
I have students that love how much we use technology at our school.
As teachers, we strive to build 21st century learners. I have students from all walks of life. At our Title I school, we have over 19 languages represented. Our diversity makes it even more imperative that we create global learners. My school is considered rural on "the books", but it is a small city school. Many reside in low-income housing while others are middle class students from broken homes. My school has been largely affected by the down economy, and our parents struggle to make ends meet each month. By providing students with all they need at school, it increases their academic success and their self-esteem.
My Project
We are fortunate to have 12 mini-laptops that we received through grant monies. We are slowly trying to build a mini-laptop mobile computer lab so that our students have multiple opportunities to build their 21st century technology skills and access valuable online instructional tools. I often use a web-based program called Aha! Science from Learning.com. The instruction, animation, and interactive activities are truly great educational tools. The students have to listen to the programs while they work. Therefore, they need ear buds to plug into the computers so they can hear and not disturb other classrooms.
Donations of ear buds to my students will give them access to meaningful, sound instructional tools online.
It is my job, as an educator, to create globally competitive 21st century learners. Having a set of ear buds for the computers we currently have will allow my children a chance to focus and learn.
