We are the second largest school in our district that directly impacts our military community along with low income and ESE communities. We house grades PK- 8 in our buildings, including the second highest population of special needs children, ESE children, and children who have a father, mother, or both parents in the military. This makes us a population that serves military families and military students. Our school directly impacts the military community it is built around. These demographics make our school a very diverse population.
Our school is also a Title I school, which means the majority of our students receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunches.
Some are displaced while others are homeless. To give these students the opportunities they all deserve, we must provide a quality learning environment. Being Title I, those essentials are few and far between. Our students are bright, they are resilient, and they strive to be the best they know how to be, but they also want to be more than that. It is our responsibility to make those things happen to them no matter what it takes.
My Project
We were granted an old record player. It has fascinated the kids. The only problem is that we have no records to play. I have chosen the Disney and Musical records to not only learn more about technology and how hearing music and other things have changed but to also show how music has changed. We play music all day long in our room. We listen to jazz, Disney classics, learning songs, orchestra and piano to name just a few genres. The kids love it when its turned on while they are writing or working on projects or at centers. The kids learn to appreciate "older styles" and all types of music.
Science and the Arts are two of the most important subjects but are lost in the daily instruction between all of the ELA and Math that is required.
Using the record player not only fosters science and how technology has changed but it also enhances the arts by playing different types of music.
Having actual records to play on our record player would be a fabulous addition to this great mystery of a contraption! The kids are fascinated and having a few records to play would only drive their enthusiasm!
