I teach first grade at a school in Chicago, Illinois. My children love reading books. First grade is one of the most important years for our young people because they learn to read. One of the best ways for young people to learn how to read is to listen to books on tape. These read-along story kits include 4 paperback copies of a kid-pleasing book, plus a recording that reads the story word for word. As kids follow along, they increase reading fluency, and become more confident readers! Young children also develop a deep love for stories. When I ask my students about their favorite books, they usual tell me about a story they have listened to on tape. Because they are able to listen and follow along as the story is read to them, reading becomes a more enjoyable and less stressful activity for them. During reading workshop, my first grade students rotate around the classroom to 4 work stations. One of those work stations is the listening center. Throughout the course of a week, each student visits the listening center at least once. I change the listening work station books each week, therefore I am always in need of new sets of books on tape. Our young people we get hours of joy and also quality reading practice from these books on tape.
