My Students
I am a Special Education teacher in Birmingham, AL. I work primarily with students with learning disabilities and/or ADHD, who attend classes in the general education setting.
These are inner city students who need to be able to feel safe while at school.
My classroom is their sanctuary. Many of them find it comforting to keep belongings in my classroom. I have become their School Mom. My students come to me to meet some basic needs, from encouraging words to basic school supplies.
My Project
iPads are available for my students to use for projects and online credit recovery classes; however, I have not been given these iPads for my classroom because there are no chargers for them. I have found charging stations with shorter charging cords to use in my classroom. Since many of my students are taking online classes, they need headphones to use when watching the videos associated with these classes.
Charging stations and headphones will help my students be able to access technology needed to succeed.
My students are not able to complete their online credit recovery class because there are no chargers for iPads. In the past, students have taken chargers and not returned them. The charging station I found has shorter cords, thus eliminating the temptation to take and keep the chargers.
Whenever possible, students at my school will repeat a class if they do not pass. However, there are times that it does not work easily into the the student's schedule. In that case, they are allowed to take the class online. The online version requires students to watch videos before taking quizzes and tests. If a student does not bring his or her own earbuds, they must keep the volume very low so they aren't disturbing students taking other online classes. Having a class set of headphones will allow my students to watch the videos without disturbing others.
