This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in Title I elementary school that supports low income families. My students are specialized ESE kids meaning that they have various developmental delays or are on the Autism Spectrum. Each student has unique goals that focus on their greatest needs. My specialized program gets these students ready for their school career and gives them an opportunity to learn and engage with peers and adults in a safe empowering classroom. It is my hope that with the early intervention I am able to provide that my students will be mainstreamed and ready for Kindergarten with confidence and skills they have acquired.
My Project
Basic literacy instruction and book appreciation are key components of my Specialized Pre-K classroom. I have many books on CDs and tapes, but playing them in my classroom proves a distraction to other students. An adjustable listening station can cater to the needs of multiple little learners at once without causing the same distraction.
Students need many opportunities to interact with books throughout the day.
Books educate, teach lessons, inspire and allow students to pretend and explore new worlds. Bean bags will allow my students to curl up and listen to a good book in a comfortable setting. I know that incorporating this center into our classroom will provide a comfortable and safe space for their cognitive development.
