Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher in a low-income school in the Bronx, where 84% of our students receive free lunch. When school started in September, I found that 24 of my 26 students were almost a full year behind in reading. As a class, we set a big goal to "try to reach the stars" by reaching a second grade reading level before the end of June.
My students and their families are personally invested in our goal. My students strive each day to move a step up our "reading staircase" to the stars. I have seen my students grow tremendously since September, although we still have a long way to go.
In order to improve my students' reading abilities, I place a large emphasis on phonics. Phonics is part of almost every lesson I teach. My principal found the money to purchase a wonderful phonics listening set. Students use this resource to listen to tapes that focus on specific phonics skills while they complete sentences on a wipe-off board. Unfortunately, there was little money left to purchase cassette players. For a class of 25, I have only one headset.
Currently, my students share our one headset for our phonics center and our books on tape. Ideally, each of my 25 students would have the opportunity to listen to phonics tapes daily. To make that possible, we need 8 cassette players with batteries. Since our classroom space is limited, students will be able to take a cassette player back to their seats.
In spite of the limited exposure my students have had so far, their interaction with the headset has been quite successful. My students are engaged and steadily improving.
