Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Expand our opportunities to listen and learn! My students love listening to audio books, and can build crucial literacy skills by reading engaging texts along with expressive narrators. We need an expanded listening center that will give every student in our class daily access to this experience.
My students are a delightful and energetic group of 24 bilingual fourth graders.
Our school is an urban, public elementary school in a terribly underfunded district. All native Spanish speakers, students come to our class with anywhere from 0-4 years of English language experience. This makes our classroom a challenging but lively and cooperative place to learn.
My Project
One of the highlights of our day is guided reading and literacy center time. While I work with a small group of students on targeted reading skills, the rest of the class works either individually or in cooperative groups at literacy learning centers. My students love the independence and responsibility that this time fosters, and listening centers are an ideal way to meet the diverse needs of these young readers. Listening centers appeal to students at all reading levels, and model fluency, pronunciation, and expression. They expand student vocabulary and support word recognition.
Our current listening center is dearly loved, but only accommodates 2-3 students at once, and we borrow most of our audio books from other classrooms. This means that many students go days or sometimes weeks without access to the center, and student choice in reading/listening material is highly limited.
These seven portable CD player and headphone sets can be shared and rotated among students in order to allow each student access to the listening center every day!
The read-along books and CDs will give us our own listening library complete with a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts for students to choose from. This access and student choice will open worlds of opportunity for these eager young readers!
