Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am determined to provide my amazing students with a high-quality, 21st century, college-prep education. I do not want the challenges of teaching in an urban public school in an under-resourced community to eclipse the many joys that occur when students are set up for success.
My school is located in the poorest Congressional district in the country, but that does not stop my students from coming to school with high hopes for their future.
After all, if Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Grandmaster Flash also came from this same neighborhood, what's stopping my students from dreaming big? Despite sometimes enormous obstacles at home and in their communities, my students are full of good will, and they are hungry for culturally relevant instruction, texts that speak to their lived realities, and learning activities that kindle the sparks of intellectual rigor.
My students want to become stronger readers, but many give up easily because of past failures or feelings of futility when it comes to potential future success. Teaching a student to become a focused reader and to engage with a long text often requires assistive technology. A set of classroom headphones would facilitate concentrated, sustained reading, writing, and listening.
My Project
My students need ten headphones to use with audiobooks and multimedia projects. Headphones would help cultivate a classroom of personalized instruction, in which students' individual needs are met in specific ways. Students would use these headphones for a variety of purposes. Struggling readers would be able to read with the accompaniment of an audiobook and other literacy software. During class and at times when students seek extra help, they would be able to tune out all the distractions around them in order to concentrate on reading.
Students would be able to view and listen to supplemental videos that tie in to a particular lesson, such as TED Talks, documentary films, and other resources online.
Also, students would use these headphones when they work on multimedia projects. Each year in my English class, students create an interdisciplinary project based on a certain topic of investigation. With the addition of headphones to our classroom, I envision students being able to enhance their projects with video, original voice recordings, and music.
Headphones in my classroom would open up many avenues to literacy for visual and auditory learners.
One way to invite teenagers into meaningful learning is to make it authentic, engaged, and multimedia. Headphones would provide struggling students with access to audiobooks, videos, and creations of original projects. As students get that first taste of success as readers and writers, becoming more fluent and confident, they realize that mindful learning can be even more fun than video games!
