Help me give my students headphones with mics for speaking assessments, and a portable classroom set-up with a traveling whiteboard and two folding tables!
The students at our school are incredibly diverse, and we see that as a growing strength. Currently, my students come from El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Guatemala, Thailand, Ukraine, Moldova, Russia, and the Pacific Islands.
We have students from all over the world who are learning English for the first time in all English-speaking classes with native English speakers, chasing their dreams at costs greater than many of us can imagine.
Sixty-six percent of our school receives free or reduced-rate lunch, well above the state average, with students overcoming all kinds of obstacles to make it to school and focus on working hard and doing their best each day.
My Project
ESL students in North Carolina (and other states) are required to take a recorded speaking assessment every year to review their progress- and it's super awkward. To help prepare for this, we do speaking assessments online during the year, which is really helping them grow! The problem is being able to hear them without microphones. I can't give them adequate feedback without these! I got 20 new headsets two years ago for this same purpose, and we used them so much that we're now down to two working pairs. Yipes. These headphones are less expensive, so I could order more and therefore help more students.
Along with headphones, I'm asking for two folding tables and a portable whiteboard to accommodate small group lessons and work in the hallways, as our classes don't quite fit in our classroom anymore!
A massive surge of new students this year (25 in my newcomer class alone, not to mention 8-10 others in more advanced classes who are also new) has our little room bursting at the seams. These students are ready to learn any way, any how, and having some portable learning materials like tables and this whiteboard will make teaching them SO much easier!
