Listen and Create With A Listening Center and Puppet Theater
My students need a listening center to allow them to explore reading and listening to stories on their own. Creating their own stories with a puppet theater will enhance their language and social skills too!
My classroom is full of 20 happy busy 4 and 5 year olds! Each day is an adventure and each day I look for new ways to engage their natural curiosity about the world around them.
The children and families we serve are from lower socioeconomic and disadvantaged backgrounds.
Many struggle with housing, food and other basic necessities. Our school is a safe, healthy and nurturing place for them.
Most of the children are entering a formal learning environment for the first time. They haven't been exposed to academic or social activities.
My Project
Literacy is so important for all students, but it's especially important for preschoolers. Early literacy plays a key role in enabling the kind of early learning experiences that research shows are linked with academic achievement, reduced grade retention, higher graduation rates and enhanced productivity in adult life. Preschool is often the first time our students are introduced to books, reading for enjoyment and listening skills.
A listening center allows the students to be engaged in listening to stories even when the teacher is working with another group.
The puppet stage and puppets will encourage the students to create stories of their own or act out a story they have just listened to.
My students need extra help with literacy as they have not had the opportunities many other students have had. Their lives are often difficult and their basic needs aren't always met. They don't have examples of family members reading for enjoyment. Finding fun and interesting ways to encourage reading, listening to stories and writing stories of their own is vital for their future success.
