My Students

Do you remember what it was like to begin reading a book and then getting stuck on a word or two? It is discouraging for all children, especially for children who are developing their fluency in English.

I teach fifth grade to children in Brooklyn, NY.

Many of my students are recent immigrants. The students in my current class are first generation Americans. They and their families have settled in our city from countries such as China, Egypt, Hong-Kong, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, and the Philippines. Some of the families speak and read English, but many do not.

My Project

I would love it if you would provide my students with a Listening Center. This product includes CD player and four headsets. The children can listen to an audio book while following along in a printed version of the book. Developing readers will benefit from hearing and seeing the English language. For many of theses children, the only place they hear English is in the classroom. I wish to maximize their opportunity to learn English by allowing them to enjoy the richness of books read on CD.

A rich inner world of imagination is opened up through audio books. Children can be exposed to grade level books that they would not otherwise have access to due to their temporary limited command of English. A listening Center will help these children only their way to becoming fluent readers and productive citizens.
