This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a first year Kindergarten teacher in a brand new school in Chicago's West Englewood neighborhood. The resources I am proposing will help me capture my students' energetic imaginations through a hands-on literacy unit about bears. This project will not only help my 22 students learn about the lovable creatures, it will also help build their reading comprehension and fluency skills.
Throughout the year, I have noticed that my students learn best with hands-on experience. One of their favorite activities was estimating how many seeds we would find in our Halloween pumpkin, which we carved and placed in the water table for an oozing sensory experience. They also enjoyed creating their own grocery store with play food and money during our interactive nutrition unit. I believe that the upcoming bears' unit based on three Eric Carle favorites (Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Polar Bear, Polar Bear, and Panda Bear, Panda Bear) will truly captivate my students' imaginations. The storytelling puppet kits will help them practice story sequencing and retelling, two important Kindergarten skills.
Thanks in advance for the consideration!
