Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergarten class is filled with excited, energetic, eager-to-learn young individuals. They thrive when given opportunities to learn from each other and by doing, both with their hands and sometimes even their whole body!
Each student comes to class with so many different experiences and knowledge that we celebrate and respect together.
Although they each have different talents, abilities, and struggles, no one child is better than the other, and that's what makes my job worth coming to every day!
My Project
Reading is such an important part of kindergarten! For many students, this is their first real experience with books and all the emotions that come with the territory. Read aloud happens on a daily basis in our room. It is a cherished time when my students can see what it looks like to be an avid reader. Excitement develops as you wait to see what will happen when the page is turned. Pictures tell a story and the words on the pages match that story. Information is jumping out at you page after page. These new nonfiction books will do all that and MORE!
There are so many types of books that my students need to be exposed to—high interest, exciting, captivating, nonfiction books being one type.
Our classroom library is lacking those books! Our leveled readers are a great start, but they are simply not enough. With these high interest books, my students will have access to information at their fingertips! They will be able to read about animals, types of transportation and the weather. These books will open their eyes to some of the wonders of the world.
I am teaching my students to be lifelong readers of all types of books including both fiction and nonfiction. These books are relevant to my students and their desire to learn all about the world! Funding this project will allow me to expose them to so much more.
