How can we close the achievement gap if students are not provided with the tools they need to be successful? As a teacher in a low-income impoverished school, it saddens me when my students are not achieving to their full potential. I believe that if we provide them with tools they need, we can even the playing field and subsequently encourage our students to strive for more.
These students are already facing challenges in their home and could use a reason to come to school.
Many of these students have never been exposed to technology and don't understand the power that is within technology and how it enhances the learning experience.
Our students are at a disadvantage! Unfortunately, half of our students have limited access to technology and don't understand that technology is the link to the future. There are many classrooms around the country and 5 miles from our school who have technology at their fingertips.
Why can't our students have the same opportunities as other children in the country, but even more importantly 5 miles away?
We don't want our students to go into the workforce without the knowledge that can make them successful. It is our goal, as educators, to equip them with the tools and skills they need to be successful. Hopefully, with this project, we can allow students to have continuous access to computers and allow students to use programs, such as Khan Academy and IXL programs. These programs are student-centered programs that empower students to know that their education can be enhanced on their own time and they can have full control over their education.
