Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A high-need college preparatory charter high school with 300 students from under-served communities wants to create a meaningful senior English class that connects with contemporary life, yet supports students in striving way beyond the classroom and their community.
The biggest obstacle I foresee in this class is below-level reading and writing skills and a lack of interest in reading and literature in general. I want to support students in reading to learn about themselves and the world and to become much better at communicating their ideas through writing.
We do a memoir project every year with the students and I wanted to make sure they were exposed to a range of memoirs in advance of writing their own. Choosing Barack Obama's memoir to teach while he is running for President is a great choice for them. Regardless of their politics, all our students have expressed intrigue and excitement about his candidacy and he gives particular hope to students of color in a low-income, urban environment. I expect this to be an opportunity to connect both to contemporary politics and the potential within.
