Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach art at Lowell. Right now we are on probation; our students reading abilities are very low. Our students need exposure to vocabulary and hands-on exciting learning.
In grades K-2 I am introducing the Elements of Art. We will be making books. Each book will demonstrate the student's knowledge of the Element of Art being studied. For example, "My Colors Book" will show the primary colors and secondary colors. Students will learn to mix secondary colors from primary colors using tempera paints and brushes. All the books will have a writing component. For example, students will write the names of the kinds of lines they are drawing in their "My Lines Book."
This project will allow students to learn about art elements by doing, while also integrating writing and reading with art. Approximately 180 students would participate in the book projects. I think this would be a lasting experience for the students because they will have their books to read when they are finished! I would appreciate the funding because currently my budget is frozen due to budget cuts. I feel this project is well-suited for our primary students to learn about art and be writers also!
