My Students

My students are amazing, diverse, inquisitive, and aren't afraid to challenge themselves. They love hands-on activities and seeing science actually happening right in front of them. I strive to have them experience natural processes and learn real-life science skills.

Nearly all of my students are seeking a career in STEM, gaining advanced science skills gives them a "leg up" post-graduation.

Our school is an extraordinarily diverse, urban school with over half of our students qualifying for free/reduced lunch. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds. In order to prepare them for their post graduation goals, they need access to a variety of lab tools and experiences to see biology in action.

My Project

By having plant growth light fixtures my students will be able to save time in growing their plants as well as have a reliable consistent source of light for success in their plant studies. Our AP Biology and Biology 1 classes have labs where they must observe photosynthesis. Our current situation requires our students to set up the lab and leave it until the next class period to get results. If we had plant growth lights, the students could complete the lab in the class period and see plants taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen right before their eyes. AP Biology students must also grow mustard plants and breed them, having the plant growth lights will provide stable conditions for the plants to grow and reproduce.

Having the plant growth light fixtures will save us time in our plant studies and provide immediate results for our students due to the higher light output they provide.

The fixtures will also fit the plant growth stand I requested in a recent DonorsChoose project or can be set up without the stand.
