Lights, Mermaids and Macabre!

My 8th grade students need books filled with classic stories to study and engage in the arts of narrative writing and play-making.

I teach 8th grade Language Arts at an inner city public school in the Midwest. Over 95% of my students are low income and minorities (mostly Hispanic and African American). My school, which is small by design, serves Pre-K to 8th, and there is one teacher per grade.

It's a struggle to get teens to read; they're more focused on all the changes occurring in their adolescent lives. Many students enter 8th grade with severe apathy toward reading and a strong desire to do nothing.

To motivate my students to read, at the beginning of the year I focus on short stories with a pinch of magic, a hint of mystery, and a touch of death (ingredients my students devour). Since my school does not use basal readers, I need class sets of books that students can read during workshops and independent reading. This year, I would like to incorporate play-making into my narrative reading and writing unit. Play-making will allow my students to develop fluency, be creative, work in teams, synthesize text, test drive different identities as they discover their own, and have fun!

Please help me motivate my students to read and make my Language Arts class fun. I can't wait for students to read "The Little Mermaid" as Andersen wrote it and experience the stories they learned as kids in a grimmer light. There is a cold and lonely stage in our gym just waiting for 32 students to bring it to life, and you can make that possible.
