I teach in a large school district in Indianapolis, Indiana. In this specific area, we have several families that have immigrated from Myanmar (Burma). Almost more than half of our school population is Chin. We have several translator and English Language Learner teachers throughout the district that help the children and families transition to our culture.
A little less than half of my class are English Language Learners.
Even though English is their second (and sometimes third) language, they are doing amazing things! I am so proud at how hard they work and show me they want to learn and improve every day. I love how they teach me about their culture while I am teaching them!
I also have students that are high ability. Their drive to succeed keeps me on my toes and keeps my creative side out. They are always challenging themselves to do better. I could not ask for a more perfect class. Each student has already made an impact on me and inspired me to write this grant.
My Project
I am requesting items to enhance my lessons. I strongly think that creating engaging and memorable lessons help students retain information being taught. The materials I am requesting are for a Native American unit of study, rocks, minerals and fossil unit, text structure tasting cafe, RACE writing response lessons and a carnival themed test prep. for state testing. All of these items will help me transform my lessons and my classroom into a new and exciting place to learn.
Think about a nine year old's excitement as they walk into a classroom that looks like a carnival!
Not only would they be extremely ready to learn that day, but it would be something they will always remember. Making memories and gaining knowledge at the same time is a win-win in my book!
The following items will be used in our Native American unit of study: teepee, deer, beaver, squirrel, wolf, buffalo rug, and campfire. I will use these items along with other things I have in my classroom to take the students back in time as we study how Native Americans lived and survived.
For part of our rocks, minerals, and fossils unit, my plan is to make our classroom look like a scene from a jurassic world. I will use the vines and dinosaur cut-out to motivate my explorers during our experiments and research.
Next, these materials will be used for our text structure tasting lessons: inflatable pizza slices and trays. I plan on turning the classroom into a pizzeria and have the students sort through nonfiction books to determine the author's organization.
All items listed below will be an important part to each lesson and fit with Indiana State Standards. I can also use many items for more than one unit or lesson.
