Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Kids love hands-on learning! They learn by building, creating, investigating, taking things apart. It all makes learning more fun and, for some students, easier to understand. I would like to update our basic Makerspace that is in our school library to give my students the opportunity to do all of that, and more, with STEAM related activities.
More than 89% of our students receive free or reduced lunch and breakfast.
There are about 400 students in our school. The majority of our students are from low income families and/or are English Language Learners. They often do not get exposed to a lot of technology, arts, or learning experiences outside of school. However, they are extremely bright and motivated to learn. I want to help them explore their interests in math, science, and technology in an environment where they feel safe to try new ideas and experiment with different ways of thinking without the pressures they might face in the classroom.
Our school's motto is "Do Your Best to Be Your Best!" Let's do our best to show my students they can be scientists, artists, or whatever they want!
My Project
Having the iPad and the green screen will allow my students to explore their creativity in so many ways. Many of my students have never been outside of our small town. With the green screen, we have the ability to transport ourselves to the places we are learning, and reading, about. Every year, my 5th grade students do a report on another state. We will now be able to take a picture of them at one of their state's landmarks or videotape their oral report as if they were standing in their chosen state. For my youngest students, we can send them to setting of their favorite book or our weekly story.
Unfortunately, most of my students have very limited access to any form of enrichment activities.
For them to be able to stand in front of a simple green screen and share a story, information about a book, or some cool facts they have learned about their state, and be transported to a whole new setting is amazing. I try to expose them to new experiences as often as I can. We will use this in our STEAM Makerspace, as well as classroom assignments. They will learn about public speaking, which is such an important life tool for school and future employment, while having fun doing it.
The possibilities of this project are endless. Students will be allowed to tap into their creativity and productivity of their classwork, extracurricular activities, and school-wide functions.
We will be taking pictures for our school yearbook and newsletter, filming videos about our special dress up days and other activities, classroom reports, and wherever our imagination takes us. I can't wait to see them give book reports while standing in the setting of the very book that they read!
