I believe learning needs to be fun! My inner city classroom participates in the Reading First Reading Program. Reading fluency is one of the five areas of reading that my students need a great deal of practice with. Readers' Theater is one strategy that combines students' desire and enthusiasm to perform with their need for oral reading practice. Using Readers' Theater as an instructional strategy motivates reluctant readers, enhances students reading skills, and builds students' confidence as oral reading skills improve. Research has shown us that in order to have good comprehension skills one must be a fluent reader. I am asking for a digital video camera for my second grade classroom so I can tape my students' Readers' Theater performances. My children will love watching themselves read and perform. I believe something amazing happens when children get to be on stage and perform, even if that stage is at the front of my second grade classroom!
