You stand on the stage, shaking. You've been practicing for months. Your lines are memorized and you know where to stand but for some reason you can't shake your nerves.
My students experience this almost daily.
They struggle with stage fright and fear of the judgment of their peers. Students often approach me excited about a performance but feeling somewhat isolated by having the "spotlight on them". Many of them also do not realize the connection between literacy and drama class.
I have requested a mix of books about stage fright. Some of these books are chapter books and others are picture books. I hope to have a library of books that students can pursue when they are feeling performance anxiety. If a student reads a story about a fictional character overcoming their fears, often the student will identify with the character and it will give them new motivation or calm their fears. I have also requested some books with monologues, scenes and readers' theater so that as a whole class we can work together to get comfortable performing.
These materials will be used by students in pre k classes through 5th grade.
You will make an impact on the entire school. Focusing on the connection between literacy and drama, there is also a possibility to get kids engaged in reading and raise test scores. Please help our school out!
