I teach fifth graders and many have agreed to join an after school program called Earthforce. Earthforce is a non-profit organization who works with teachers and students to bring awareness to environmental and community issues. The purpose of Earthforce is to help mold and create youth that are caring citizens who are dedicated to helping the community and the world. The students chose to concentrate on improving the school and community’s recycling programs. Students noticed that many students and teachers are unaware of what can be recycled or are not using the recycling bins in the correct ways. The students feel with education this problem can be eliminated. The students decided that they also want to target the community members who are not taking advantage of recycling service due to being unaware of what to do.
The challenge we are facing is how to get the word out. Earthforce members want to do Public Service Announcements (PSAs) that can be aired during our SPES Morning News Program that is aired throughout the school. They also want to put these announcements on internet through an iMovie. The students will produce, direct, and star in the PSAs. These videos can be used yearly for students and teachers to be reminded of the process of recycling and the community can visit the school’s Earthforce site to learn more about how to recycle.
We need a digital video camera to record these Public Service Announcements. This will benefit all students and staff at Stiles Point by educating them on the importance of recycling and how to recycle in the classroom and at home. This will benefit the community in that they can access the PSA once we get the word out about our site and involve the media in helping the community learn how easy it is to recycle and how to do it. It will benefit fifth grade Earthforce members in that they will produce, star, and direct these PSAs and will indeed educate the community and school and this worthy cause. This will indeed impact all students at Stiles Point if they learn early the importance of recycling and how easy it is to do! This will hopefully turn into a lifetime practice.
The students in Earthforce are the ones who chose this project and are very passionate about the environment. They will not be able to reach as many people by simply telling others about how to recycle in our community and school. The students will also not have a chance to learn how to produce, direct, and act in a PSA without the video camera. Please help us mold the youth that will impact our world!
