I am a first grade teacher in Brooklyn. Many of my students love when I read to them. However, when it is time to read on their own, they become less interested. They become frustrated when I ask them to write a response to a story or about their own life experience. I am currently looking for exciting ways to keep my students engaged in reading, writing, and history. I know that most of my kids love to watch television and light up in front of a camera. In high school, I studied television journalism. Then it came to me: what if I turned part of classroom into a studio? I could have the students learn history and report it back to others in a news studio. They would be responsible for learning the curriculum, writing the scripts, correcting and editing the materials, and reading it. It would also answer the problem of public speaking. In order to start this project, I would need a video camera, a stand, a radio for music or sound effects, and tapes or DVDs to record the children's work. I truly believe that if you get the children learning at a very early age, they will be excited about learning for life. I am responsible for building the student's educational foundation. I want to make sure that the foundation is strong. Thank you in advance.
