I proudly teach 9th-12th grade students at a Title One high school which offers both magnet and traditional programs. My students’ focus is in the area of Television and Film Production. The storytellers, future filmmakers, and broadcasters in the program learn the basics of reporting, scriptwriting, videography, editing, sound, and lighting. They work diligently in class to produce a variety of projects to enter various film and television contests at the state and national levels.
Our program draws students from across our county who have a passion for creating entertaining and compelling films and news features.
Many students live over an hour away and take multiple busses to get to school each day. This dedication is a testament to the students’ desire to be in this audition-based magnet program.
Using the skills they learn in the classroom, our students have won prestigious awards at film festivals, scholastic media competitions and in one case, a student Emmy award. Our graduating TV/Film students have been accepted to Television and Film Programs at UCF, SCAD, FSU and Valencia College just to name a few.
My Project
Think about when you were a child. You go to the movie theater, get some popcorn, sit down and escape into a world where anything possible. Film is a medium that allows for unbridled creativity. It allows for people to get their craziest and most absurd ideas to the public. Some of these ideas have included films such as Star Wars, E.T., and The Karate Kid to name a few. These films and more seemed crazy on paper, but when made into a final product, they have inspired audiences for generations and will continue. Film making is an art form that often does inspire and make the world a better place.
My students are striving to inspire others and make the world a better place through the art of film making.
Up to this point, my students have created award-winning pieces with cameras and computers that are considered obsolete. With access to new equipment, students will use the iMacs to write scripts and edit film. The Canon cameras will be utilized to execute their ideas to their fullest extent. In order for them to reach their full potential, we are hoping you would be so generous as to help us acquire more up to date and technologically advanced equipment.
