Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

The one thing that makes my students so special is their diversity. We have students from all over the world and all walks of life in our school which is a learning experience in itself. In an environment such as this, students learn respect for others and their cultural differences.

What this diversity also creates are language barriers that often makes teaching and learning difficult because of the background knowledge and exposure that comes with being from different cultural backgrounds and varied experiences.

That's why it is so important for me to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of my students.

My Project

After evaluating the varied learning styles of my students through a learning style inventory, I was able to understand how best they learn. With a large number of students being visual and kinesthetic learners, I am constantly looking for ways to engage students through their modality of learning.

Taking my students to see the play "Paige in Full" would allow them to see firsthand how the elements of a story can be played out in various modes.

I also believe in teaching beyond the classroom to make skills and concepts seem more relevant to students through exposure (hence field trips). Often times, this real life exposure carries over in the classroom and students ultimately have that “ah ha” moment.
