My students need an iPad with enough space to record their theater performances and take high res portfolio photographs of their artwork. This tool will increase parent involvement and jump start our unit on digital photography/manipulation.
I am a special education visual and performing arts teacher at a NYC public school, centered around the arts. All of my students are in smaller classroom sizes, allowing for targeted, individualized instruction. Through an exploration of art materials and techniques, students are able to exercise their imagination, construct meanings, and depict their experiences. Through observation and discussion of works of art, even my students with limited communication have begun to develop a visual arts vocabulary to describe or reflect on art making and the elements of design.
Although my students have special disabilities, their creative abilities are even more special!
Art class is a positive environment for every one of my students. It is a time where mistakes are encouraged, and appropriate forms of socio-emotional expression are at their peak. Dedication to the arts is visible in every facet of our program. Each year, my students put on a musical performance, where along with singing and dancing, they design a set, costumes, props, artwork, and even write a script. Our most current artwork lines the halls of our school proudly, showcasing our students' special growing artistic abilities, and offering parents and visitors a peek into our gallery of artists.
My Project
My students work hard every day, independently and actively engaging in the process of art-making. However, we currently don't have a tool to record our process. From rehearsals to the final performance, from material exploration to the creation of a work of art, from one line on a paper to an entire gallery of artwork, our visual and performing arts story is extra special and needs to be told!
Please help us document our artistic journey.
We need you to show special education students that visual and performing arts is integral and accessible to ALL students.
With your help, parents will have an behind the scenes look into our classroom and process, watching us grow along the way. Students will have the opportunity to take pictures of their art and their peers' art, opening up more discussions on our creations and masterworks. On trips, students can take photos of art that inspires them and integrate them back into the classroom! It will facilitate an introduction to our unit on digital photography and digital manipulation, so students of all skill levels will excel.
