My Students
I teach in a Title I school. Many of our students live in single parent homes. The number of English Language Learners increase each year. Most of our students get breakfast at school and a sizable number are part of the Backpack Program where students take home a bag of food over the weekend. The surrounding neighborhoods have what the students call "candy stores." These are not official stores, but someone's resident where you can purchase snacks. There are no signs, but the children know where they are. The students utilize these stores, especially on the weekend.
I understand my students, because I attended school with kids just like mine.
My Project
These materials will be used by students participating in our annual African American History program. These students, as well as students watching the program will learn about pioneering African Americans actors and actresses who portrayed positive characters on television and in motion pictures. The black t-shirts will be worn by students dancing to the upcoming Black Panther Superhero soundtrack. Suspenders, Swing dresses, Tuxedo, Cinderella dress Princess costume, Suspender Bow tie sets, Polka Dots Party Dress, Princess Tutu Tulle Birthday Party Dress, Maxi Skirts, Nurse uniform, and boys pre-tied Bow Ties are to be worn by performing students dancing to movie soundtracks, such as The Wiz, Men in Black , Purple Rain, and Princess and the Frog.
With your help, my students will be made aware of yet another career opportunity that is within their reach.
Students are reminded, that anything they imagine to do, can come true. Living African American actors and actresses are represented by students for their contributions to television and film. Students sing and dance to musical numbers from films such as "The Wiz" "Princess and the Frog," and "Purple Rain." Actresses such as Diahann Carroll will be represented for her non-stereotypical role as a nurse on the TV show Julia.
