Lights, Camera, Action: Performing In The Classroom
My students need 3 Android tablets to record live performances to enhance the California Theater Arts Standard based curriculum in my second grade classroom.
It is important that all students have quality arts experiences in the classroom for the good of their hearts and minds. My English Language Learners need the infusion of the arts to promote the creative, collaborative and multifaceted thinking required to be a successful 21st century learner.
My class is a Strategic English Immersion classroom where many of my students are being exposed to English for the first time.
They need opportunities to engage in language and what better way than through the performing arts. Through the use of recording videos, students can engage in cooperative groups, create scripts and perform for the entire class. They can create their own interpretations of books read, design interviews and perform skits to teach each other everyday content. Most importantly they will gain confidence in speaking the language and have the chance to practice on video. The art of filming and performing supports the understanding of learning a new language.
My Project
The Android Tablet will assist in providing standards-based arts
instruction in my classroom throughout the year. The tablets will allow my students to record live theatrical performances that they create based on our curriculum. Through the use of the Android Tablets, my students will be able to apply processes and skills in acting, directing and scriptwriting to create formal and informal theater through film. They will develop cooperative skills in order to retell familiar stories, sequence story points and identify characters, setting, and conflict with their peers. They will use improvisation to portray such concepts as friendship, emotions, and 2nd grade health content. These skills are necessary in each child's development as a 21st century learner. Not only will we be able to view the videos in class, but the child's families can view them at home, thus making them a part of their child's education. This will create a "Disney" family experience.
The performing arts had such a deep impact throughout my personal school experiences, so much so, that I majored in theater in college.
I am now credentialed as a K-8 multiple subject teacher with a supplementary credential in Theater Arts. I understand how important it is to expose my students to the arts. My arts training along with your donation to fund the Android Tablets will allow my students to have an enriching arts experience. This experience could impact their lives as it has contributed to mine.
