My students need a quality camcorder.
“This is about training the work force of the future." (George Lucas, American film director and producer) Our school's daily morning news show plays an important role in teaching fifth grade students valuable life skills.
I am privileged to teach at a public elementary school that serves approximately 420 students in grades PreK-5.
The majority of students attending the school have one parent in the military; these students often find themselves in single parent situations for extended periods of time due to military deployments. The rest of the school’s population consists of choice students – students who have chosen to attend the school because of its high test scores and positive annual report cards from the State Department of Education. The school has a strong character education program. One way that the guidance counselor reinforces the character education lessons taught in class is with a daily segment on the school's news show. Every morning, all the students in the school start their day with fun character education songs.
The school's live morning news show is produced by teams of fifth graders. In order to be on a news team, fifth graders have to submit an application with teacher recommendations as well as go through an interview process. As a result of their participation in the news show, fifth graders develop essential skills for success. They learn responsibility, accountability, flexibility, self-direction, how to interact effectively with others, and technology skills. Students assist with writing scripts and setting up equipment (teleprompter, Tricaster, camera) on a daily basis. Right now, students are using an outdated camcorder to broadcast the news show. There have been times when the battery has died in the middle of the show. It is frustrating to see the students' efforts be diminished by faulty, outdated equipment.
Your support of this project will enable the morning news show to continue at our school.
It will give fifth graders an opportunity to make a positive impact on the school community as well as develop essential life skills. Your donation will empower students who have decided they want to grow as individuals by challenging themselves to try something that they wouldn't normally do, such as be a camera operator or anchor on the news.
