Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I middle school in rural California. A majority of my students come from low socioeconomic households, and over half are Hispanic. 8% of the school consists of migrant English learners.
I have 10 amazing students in my classroom.
My students have varied disabilities from blindness with autism, autism, and a wide range of learning disabilities. We work on daily living skills, language arts, and math. They are included in the general ed classes and activities with support as needed.
I also teach an amazing theater group on campus. It is open to any student who is willing to commit and maintain their grades. We work all spring to put on a gigantic musical theater performance for all of the elementary schools in our district and nightly performances for our community.
My Project
Musical theater encourages engagement and learning and has a positive impact on emotional, physical and social development. Kids who participate in theater programs enjoy the many benefits it offers and will take those skills throughout their lives, making them more creative, confident and productive individuals. My passion is bringing the musical theater experience to the students at my school.
My students have been working for months on the production of Aladdin Jr., which they will be performing in May.
I am requesting stage makeup, pretend sword props, costume racks, and concession stand items (including a popcorn machine and cotton candy bowl). All proceeds from our concession stand will help us to purchase additional lighting and sound equipment for next year's production. Makeup is needed so that the students do not look washed out on stage. Costume racks are needed so that our room can be organized into a functional space. This will make it much easier for my students to go through quick costume changes throughout the show.
We have an extremely limited budget. These items will be hugely beneficial to my students and our production!
