Students at our middle school have been building our technology skills all year, so in many ways, we were more prepared than other schools to move to online instruction. The challenge is that our students are now at home in VERY different environments.
The thing that has surprised me the most is how determined to learn our students are.
Many students are at home helping their families and caring for younger siblings while parents are at work. Like many teachers, I am offering meetings in real time where students can meet virtually, but scheduling challenges mean that many students cannot take advantage of that. Though the district was able to order hotspots for students that needed them, many are in neighborhoods that aren't served with reliable internet service.
Our students are fighting tooth and nail for their education, and we refuse to give up on them.
My Project
Through our school's Media Center and Audio Visual Club, we have made videos before the shutdown. We already knew that this was an area that needed better tech and more practice. The Covid-19 shutdown forced our hand. We need these skills NOW!
Filming tools will be used for instructional videos to support students now AND for students to record videos when we go back to school.
Our hope is that these resources will transform the school's current diy studio into one that can create GREAT looking videos.
We already have cameras, editing software, and a green screen back drop. When we recorded videos earlier this year, we struggled with lighting and audio quality. The only place for us to record was in a back corner in the library.
We need to be able to fully light the area and to HEAR the students! Our kids wrote really engaging scripts, but audiences struggled to hear them clearly. We only had one microphone and LOTS of background noise. Filming and editing videos has a long learning curve, but our students LOVE doing it. We want to be able to encourage them to continue doing so.
