Do you remember conducting your first science lab experiment and feeling like a real scientist? Our students need science lab materials to open their eyes to the wonderful world of scientific inquiry.
How would you like to be an inspired student attending a science magnet school and not have hands-on lab activities?
Probably not the experience you were hoping for. About half of our 620 students are struggling with poverty and they have an opportunity to attend a magnet school for free. Our school community supports our families in a variety of ways. We provide the students with a free breakfast each morning giving them the fuel they need for learning. Most of our before and after school programs have scholarships available for those in need and sometimes we have local businesses sponsor the activity so all kids can participate. Our science magnet school is home to neighborhood kids, as well as the students that apply to be a part of our science family. These students are the future STEM leaders. They are motivated, curious, critical thinkers that will flourish when given the materials to do so.
My Project
The students have science everyday with their homeroom teacher. Then once a week, they go to a separate science class challenging them to a new science topic. The students focus on a new unit each month. This "Light" unit will introduce them to the properties of light by conducting experiments using paper tubes, flashlights, mirrors, convex and concave lens, and much more. They will explore the concept that light travels in straight lines and document what happens when it strikes transparent, translucent, and opaque objects. Students will design experiments to investigate the concept of reflection and refraction. They will be using prisms and diffraction grating to discover that white light is made up of a spectrum of colors.
This Building Blocks of Science "Light" kit will help us create another amazing experience for the kids.
Not only will they be used to conduct the activities within the kit, the materials can be used for a variety of other science experiments. Most of the supplies are non-consumable and will bolster our lab supplies. The mission of our school is to meet each child's needs by providing unique educational experiences, inspiring critical thinkers and lifelong learners.
