My students need manipulatives such as Rainbow Pyramid Stackers, Translucent Pattern Blocks, Numbers and Letters and more to use with our table top light table.
I teach in a rural farm town in Illinois, where I encourage students to find their inner leader and celebrate their differences. Students in my classroom are full of life and eager to learn. It is important to me that the kindergarten students in my room learn through hands-on experiences which allow them to express themselves and problem solve without immediate intervention from an adult.
It is important that my students do not lose their love for learning in kindergarten.
Right now there are a lot of programs that are forcing kindergarten students to learn through curriculum that is too rigorous and inappropriate. I am working hard to follow the curriculum but keeping it fun and engaging for my students.
My Project
My students need manipulatives to use on our new light table. We currently have human x-rays and up close nature slides. I would like for my students to have animal x-rays, to learn more about the bone structure of animals compared to humans. I would also like them to have translucent building materials, like translucent pattern blocks and pyramid stackers to be able to learn about shapes and color mixing. I have also asked for tracing cards, translucent letters and numbers to help aid my students in learning.
It is important to me to provide my students with hands on learning experiences that are appropriate for their age level.
All too often, we are trying to force kindergarten students into situations where they are sitting at desks learning for long periods of time. It has been proven through research many times that this is not how kindergarten students learn. It is my goal to help my students reach their full potential using strategies and materials that are beneficial to them and will not cause school burn out down the road.
