Lighting, Gear Storage and Tech for our Cramped Combo Class
Help me give my students better lighting, a document camera, basic supplies, and large bags so their snow gear does not get lost in our cramped classroom.
Our district is one of the most diverse in the nation. Our students come from a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds, speak multiple languages, and perform on a wide range of academic abilities. It is amazing to educate children who are so different from one another. They have some of the most fun and vibrant personalities, and I am excited every day I am able to work with them. I have never met more hardworking students!
With all of the demands we put on our young students, they deserve a chance to learn through hands-on activities, in a fun and engaging environment.
We try our best as a school and community to present our students with creative ways to express their knowledge. I am so excited to bring new opportunities to my students. I can't wait to inspire them to become more motivated learners and kinder citizens.
My Project
Our class is a K/1 combination with 30 students right now. Our numbers are changing weekly which means reteaching routines and expectations constantly. It has been a real challenge so far, and stress levels are running high amongst staff members and students due to the effects of the pandemic while we continue in person learning. We need lamps and led candles for our classroom to keep the fluorescent lighting to a minimum and create a calmer environment for our students.
We are trying so hard to eliminate every instance that costs us valuable learning time.
Because we are a combination class, I have to split the students throughout the day and work with them in different rooms. I am constantly unplugging and taking my document camera to various rooms and it is costing me valuable teaching time and quite honestly has become very inconvenient and frustrating. My students are so young, they need visuals and for me to work along with them. I have to have a document camera in order to teach effectively.
With 30 students and winter coming quickly, our cubby situation has been really difficult. I don't have enough room for the students to store their hats, gloves, and outdoor gear if their backpack is in the cubby. I need large Ikea shopping bags for the kids to put their gear in so they don't lose it and everything can fit in one place. With 30 students ages 5-7, two grade levels, and a pandemic that has many of them missing school, we cannot afford to waste any time at school looking for gear.
