My drama students are producing Once on This Island - set at the Jersey shore post hurricane. Every year we compete with Paper Mill's Rising Star Competition, and every year we get knocked for poor lighting. Our system is antiquated and while we have a cyc curtain, but we do not have cyc lights. The curtain is not saturated with lights like we would like.
My students in grades 9-12 do a lot with what little they have.
They have been known to use strobe lights and aluminum to mimic a storm, and used tap lights in Belle's bedroom to make it look "fancy". We are a small school with a hometown feel, like Mayberry. The Drama Club's motto is : we are a family, we are dysfunctional and that's ok. While being a dysfunctional family is ok, having dysfunctional lights is not. Please help these suburban students take our productions to the next level and shine bright!
We have several students that would like to pursue lighting design in college, but will lack the technology to compete with their peers. These lights will aid in giving our students more modern lighting design experience.
My Project
We do not have proper cyc lights, and therefore the mood of our past productions were not as strong as they could have been. These lights would bathe the stage in light and saturate it with meaning!
These lights would allow us to compete with Paper Mill's Rising Star program and make our productions more professional.
"Once on This Island" is an emotional journey about the power of love against death, and we need powerful lights to tell this story. To mount this production, these lights would allow my students a proper way to design lights, as opposed to using our old lights from the 1990s.
