Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hardworking kids with big dreams. Many of them held down jobs at businesses that have remained open (grocery stores, fast food) when we were still in school and now a lot of them are having to pick up more hours at their jobs to make up for the income some of their parents have lost. I try to deliver instruction online virtually, but I know many of them are busy at work almost all day.
Our school is a Title 1 school and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
This means that a majority of the families in our area fall within the poverty guidelines. I know their first concern right now is probably food and money to pay rent or mortgages. I want to help make learning a little easier for them and allow them to still get quality instruction on their own schedule.
My Project
I teach AP Physics at a Title 1 school, and I have been wanting to move towards a flipped classroom model for a while now, but the recent pandemic has forced me to expedite this process. I want to be able to make videos to help with distance learning if this becomes our new normal for a while, and also to make videos that my students can refer to not only before class to introduce them to a topic, but also to model problem solving techniques for them.
This project would allow for me to build a collection of videos to model problem solving and provide a background on new material.
This would allow me to spend class time doing labs and also allow for more time to differentiate activities for different student abilities. Another positive would be that this would allow me to have something for students who were absent to look at to help them get what they missed.
