My classroom is a self-contained early childhood special education classroom. My school is a combined Head Start, state Pre-k and special education for three to five year olds. Our school serves around 550 children each year. Next year our school will qualify as 100% free breakfast/lunch for all children.
In my classroom I serve pre-school children with a wide range of abilities not disabilities.
The children come to my classroom on their third birthday, anytime through out the school year. The children come with a variety of diagnoses: developmental delays in speech, language, motor skills or academic skills, chromosomal disorders or autism. It doesn't matter what the diagnoses is, we work with where the child is and help them grow to be a member of our classroom community. Our number one goal is for them to be able to participate in the classroom and with their peers.
My Project
I have an early childhood special education classroom with students who have a variety of sensory needs and learn in a variety of ways. A light table with give us another way to help engage my students in learning. We can use the light table to meet some of their sensory needs with the color changing lights and the sensory bin. Once their sensory needs are meet, they are ready to engage and learn.
My students do not learn in typical ways and we will be able to use the manipulatives on the light table to engage them and help them focus on their early learning.
We will be able to use the table and the manipulatives to engage my early learners in turn taking and interacting with others. These materials will help my students continue to learn and grow, so they can be an active participate in our classroom community.
